TARGETS AND ACTIONS ON TRANSPORT DECARBONISATION
The Netherlands has set a target to achieve a 49% GHG emission reduction by 2030 (compared to EU target of 40%). The ambition is expected to be raised to 55% of GHG emission reduction at COP23 in 2017. The transport sector is set to reduce 6,9 Mton of GHG emission by 2030. It also set goal to have all new sales in 2030 to be zero emission vehicles.
The Netherlands has developed the Green Deal approach as an accessible way for companies, other stakeholder organizations, local and regional government and interest groups to work with Central Government on green growth and social issues. The Car Sharing Green Deal aims to have 100,000 shared cars in 2018.
To scale up ambition for transport decarbonisation, the Dutch government is also Involved in other multi-stakeholder initiatives such as the International Transport Forum (ITF) Decarbonisation Project and the International Platforms on Alternative Fuels, Biofuels, Electric and Hydrogen.
FORMER TDA CHAIR
Stientje van Veldhoven, Minister for the Environment of the Netherlands took over the role from José Mendes, former Deputy Secretary of State and Mobility of Portugal and served as the TDA Chair from July 2019 to July 2021. With her leadership and vision, the alliance moved forward on its mission of accelerating the worldwide transformation of the transport sector towards a net-zero mobility system before 2050.
Under her leadership, the TDA welcomed five new members; successfully launched the call for zero-emission freight vehicles, currently signed by 84 organisations and covering 294,628 zero emission freight vehicles; initiated the How-to Guide, “Zero-Emission Zones: Don’t Wait to Start with Freight”, and convened a cohort of world-class professionals at the En Route to COP26 event. The launch of the call for global ZE-MHDV at the 12th meeting of the Clean Energy Ministerial, the introduction of the TDA at the EU Environmental Council, and the commissioning of the World Resources Institute for the TDA paper on Steering A Green, Healthy, And Inclusive Recovery Through Transport are also prominent examples of her remarkable contribution to the TDA.
BEST PRACTICES
Since June 2015, 35 electric buses at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol have been transporting passengers to and from aircraft to gate. Each bus has its own charging point at the airport, making Schiphol the biggest charging station for electric buses in Europe. A fleet of 167 electric taxis are also provided in the airport.
