By 2025, all shared cars in Rotterdam will be electric. Rotterdam expresses this ambition in the ‘Policy Document and Permits for Car sharing’ (pdf, dutch version). To achieve this objective, permits are issued for free floating shared cars in the city. Already, all new shared cars in the city must be electric. 

In the Policy for Car sharing, Rotterdam also expresses the ambition that by 2030 about 5% of all cars in Rotterdam will be shared cars. These ambitions are an important step in the mobility transition, in which Rotterdam is working on an accessible, healthy city.

Innovative approach to traffic and transport for the City of Rotterdam

Rotterdam is a city that is continuously growing. Space is becoming scarcer, climate change has also forced the city to make smart choices. To give the city the brightest future possible, the City of Rotterdam is working on an innovative approach to traffic and transport. Shared mobility plays a significant role in this transition. Together with market parties, Rotterdam is working on ways to make shared mobility available to all residents and visitors of the city.

“In some cases, the shared car can even replace a private car,” says Judith Bokhove, vice mayor and alderman of Mobility, Youth and Language of Rotterdam. “On average, cars are used only 5% of the time. The rest of the time the cars stand still. But people do pay insurance, road tax and parking costs. Shared cars are ideal for people who hardly use their own car and find the costs of such a stationary car too high.”

Working on the field of Country, City and Company

Working on this mobility transition, Rotterdam is part of the playing field of Country, City and Company. The field where the major drivers come together to realize zero-emission mobility. The new Policy for Car sharing in Rotterdam contributes to the Green Deal Car sharing. The Green Deals are an initiative from the Dutch government to support sustainable economic growth, or ‘green growth’, by stimulating sustainable innovation. One of the Green Deals is the Deal Car Sharing, of which the Municipality of Rotterdam is a partner.  With the Policy for Car sharing, including above ambitions and objectives, Rotterdam is contributing to this Green Deal. 

In addition, the Policy for Car sharing has been developed together with companies and is also part of the Mobi-Mix project, a project subsidized by Interreg 2 Seas of the European Union. This is a project in which Rotterdam collaborates with other cities, mobility experts and knowledge institutes and companies to achieve CO2– reduction by shared mobility concepts. By doing this jointly, knowledge is shared about the ways of cooperation between governments and companies.
