California Enacts Sweeping Climate Measures

On 16 September 2022, Mr. Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, signed a package of legislation that commits the state to cutting air pollution by 60%, refinery pollution by 94%,  and state oil consumption by 91%, leading to $23 billion in avoided damages from pollution and creating 4 million jobs in the process.

These measures are among the most significant action on the climate crisis in California’s history. The legislation includes a record $54 billion investment in climate action, which exceeds what most countries are spending to mitigate the climate crisis, and advances economic opportunity and environmental justice in communities across the state.

California has proven to be a leader in implementing strategies to reduce climate change. Congratulations California! Initiatives like this should be replicated by others to successfully transition to  sustainable transportation.
