Costa Rica Announces New Electric Train

“We can’t use Coronavirus as an excuse to stop our work on climate change. Two days ago we presented an ambitious project in Costa Rica to have the largest concession in the country of a 100% electric train of more than 82 km that will reduce emissions.

The electric train provides utilities for society and for businesses. It’s a change of paradigm that will create a more collaborative system between public and private transportation and will make the whole economy more competitive.”

The president of TDA member country Costa Rica, Carlos Alvaro Quesada, highlighted the importance of taking action on sustainable transport even amid the coronavirus in a recent interview with the BBC.

The electric train it’s beneficial for society and for businesses. It’s a change of paradigm that will create a more collaborative system between public and private transportation and will make the whole economy more competitive.

The electric passenger train will feature 46 stations, 10 will be intermodal — connecting directly with buses, taxis or bike systems.

Once completed, the urban electric train would transport 200,000 people each day throughout the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).

The electric train would play a major role in helping Costa Rica decarbonize by 2050. The country’s electrical grid has run on more than 98% renewable energy for the last five years, but the transportation sector remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels.

Per Costa Rica’s National Decarbonization Plan, presented by First Lady Claudia Dobles last February, the train would be the centerpiece in a network of electric buses, walking and biking paths.
