MOU on Zero Emission and Heavy Duty Vehicles Supported Internationally
On November 17, 2022, at the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, the United States of America, Ukraine, Ireland, Aruba, Belgium, Croatia, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Liechtenstein, and Lithuania announced that they would join the Global Memorandum of Understanding on Zero Emission Heavy and Medium Duty Vehicles (Global MOU), co-led by the Netherlands and CALSTART
This initiative, first introduced at the 26th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP26) held in Glasgow last year, puts countries on a path to 100% new zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (MHDV) sales by 2040 at the latest, with an interim goal of at least 30% new sales by 2030.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm expressed how important it is to work together worldwide to achieve clean energy goals and how aligned this global partnership is with President Biden’s Agenda to drive technological innovation, lower vehicle costs, and reduce transportation emissions.
The international support manifested at COP27 gives further momentum to this ambitious agreement to address climate emissions from transport.
The non-binding Global MOU is also part of the Drive to Zero Campaign of the Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI) under the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM.)
