ACTIVE MOBILITY

WHY IT MATTERS?

The transport sector is in transition and is rediscovering both cycling and walking as serious modes of transportation.

Active mobility not only contributes significantly to urban mobility, road safety and emission reductions, but has also positive impacts on the economy, social inclusion, accessibility and health.

Cycling is up and coming in many cities worldwide, because it’s healthy, convenient, fun and sometimes even faster than any other transport mode within cities.

IDENTIFIED CHALLENGES

  • Exploiting COVID-19 momentum:

As car and public transport use are dropping due to COVID-19, levels of walking and cycling are rising, putting pressure on existing active travel systems and infrastructure.

What best practices can we learn and share with our partners? And how can we support and incentivize this movement?

  • Maintaining a balance between countries, cities, and companies:

There’s currently a lot of traction and action from cities, but at the same time, countries and companies should be part of the transition to more active modes of transport.

OBJECTIVE

  • Maintaining a balance between countries, cities and companies:

There’s currently a lot of traction and action from cities, but at the same time, countries and companies should be part of the transition towards more active modes of transport.

These three ingredients are essential in creating an active mobility system and enabling a modal shift.

1)        Hardware: helping countries, cities and companies in creating or adapting their infrastructure to promote the use of active mobilities.

2)        Software: Mindset, behavioral changes. Convincing people to leave their cars at home and change their behavior towards more sustainable modes of transport.

3)        Org-ware: working with different stakeholders to achieve a more cycling-friendly city, nation or professional environment.
