TARGETS AND ACTIONS ON TRANSPORT DECARBONISATION

The Municipality of Porto has set target to reduce 45% of CO2 emissions by 2020 on 2004 levels. The transport sector aims to reduce 22.55% of CO2 emissions in the same period. The city government also set a CO2 per capita emission target of 2 tonnes CO2eq by 2050.

Porto has developed the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) which defines the actions towards achieving the 45% CO2 reduction target. SEAP includes plans to promote public transport, intermobility options, cycling and walking etc. Porto also participated in the ClimAdaPT.Local project to develop Municipal Strategies for Adaptation to Climate Change (EMAAC).

  • Porto has initiated a process of replacing its fossil fuel vehicles with electric cars: acquisition of 390 vehicles, 241 for municipality use and the rest to municipal management (water, public works, environment and leisure)
  • Save almost 600 thousand euros per year in fuel

  • Reduce 2300 tons of CO2 emissions
